Unclean foods were off the menu. God had a chance to exclude unclean animals in the flood, but they went in two by two.
But clean animals went in as seven pairs, so that there was enough fresh meat available for consumption, while on the ark.
That says something about a divine principle, characterized by the parable of the tares and wheat.
He allows good and not so good to coexist, and will only remove the tares or what is bad when his judgments are fulfilled.
So, for all the ideals of our faith, the contradiction of such imperfections persists. But always for a greater good.
Take the pig, the hyena, the fly and the crayfish. They are all unclean. Why? Because they are scavengers. They eat up waste (the fly produces the maggots that eats up dead bodies).
They are good for our overall well-being, just not good for consumption.
Well at a micro level, there are bugs that are directly good for us and bugs not good for us directly but certainly indirectly.
They follow an instinctive pattern. They have DNA, RNA and nucleic acid, but are at the fringe of life, without the ability to independently interpret or process the information in such cells.
So to replicate itself, a virus must attach to a host cell and get the host to use its DNA to reproduce a swarm of similar pathogens.
That's how it gets into us. Its a lot like a Trojan Horse. The virus works through a normal cell, to stage an invasion.
But even then, not all viruses are out to do harm, they behave a lot like the pig, the hyena, the fly and the crayfish.
Mutations produce bad pathogens. However, the principle still holds as it does for 'where sin abounds, grace much more'.
The world is full of people viruses, bad individuals and organisations that break down our world and invade our space.
But God lets its be. Why? What is wrong with him that he would abide so many wrongs?
Well, the root cause is sin. Sinful, unwholesome lives and abuse of our world does corrupt our environment.
All the objection to vaccines is unfounded. I will share on that separately. But that and antibiotics provide us with natural ways to preempt a viral attack by supplying our white cells with cheat codes.
Indeed, many herbs are natural antibiotics and have been used from biblical times.
But of course that isn't enough. What we need to see off such invasions, is a better defensive system.
And that brings us to the antithesis of a sinful existence.
Its why Jews stood out from their background with clean living, circumcision, healthy diets and awareness of what is unclean.
They even avoided leavened bread, because the yeast bacteria then and now, is not good for the gut. But it was a useful bacterium.
So, we have some biblical clues. These things will coexist with us, but a biblical lifestyle can tilt the balances in our favor.
Next up, I will talk about how bugs go to war.
