In a relatively unexpected twist in US politics, the presumptive US democratic nominee chose Kamala Harris.
She is the first female to be nominated for Vice Presidency, so will make history if she assumes that role after the elections.
No doubt she is a most capable lawyer. I have seen her debating senior opposition leaders and she can hold her ground.
She was a "cop" as in law enforcement, and that could be a bit harsh for a nation reeling from police brutality but otherwise still so wary of female leaders.
Don't get me wrong, I am all in favor of a black female in that role. Indeed, I think its a healthy development.
Women can bring a worthy balance to politics, as has been proved in New Zealand, Germany and other female-led nations.
They tend to be more nurturing and less inclined to ego-driven political squabbles.
So, who knows. Its an interesting development and could prove to be a shrewd move by Joe Biden.
For all the excessively polarized political environment of the USA, Biden is seen as a moderate and a possible peacemaker.
The last four years have been fractious and incredibly damaging to the US, domestically and globally.
There is a real hope that a sober, wiser, older, upright leader like Biden will restore some faith in US leadership.
I still feel there is a real possibility of a Trump victory, notwithstanding.
My reasons: he is the incumbent, gerrymandering has adjusted electoral districts in his favor, and technically he could win the electoral college vote if he has 45% of the overall vote. He also has an unyielding base of 40-42% of US voters.
The US will be on a knife-edge in the last 70 or so days before 3 November, as anything could change the electoral outcome.
Indeed, postal ballots could drag the results on for days and there is some concern that Trump may defy the results anyway.
Right now, Trump is beleaguered. He has mismanaged most things, but is most unforgiven for his dreadful response to Covid-19.
As such, he lags Biden by 51% to 42% (depending on which poll you use), but he is stabilizing his once rapidly declining base.
I am less concerned with personalities in all of this.
All I know for sure is that the outcome of this election will set the stage for major geopolitical change in our world.
The world itself is on a knife-edge in the wake of Covid-19 and its impact on the global economy.
Chaos is not far below the surface and may yet erupt as it has in a few isolated nations.
That will provide fertile ground for all kinds of political intrigue in a world that is riding into a perfect storm.
But my prayer is still that order and peace will triumph as I still believe there is enough goodwill in our broken world.
