President Trump is an inveterate liar, but two claims this weekend are noteworthy.

Firstly he claimed to be the first leader in 50 years to  provide better options for military veterans.

That was challenged by the press, so he immediately shut down the press meeting and walked out - an admission of guilt.

In truth, it was Barack Obama who introduced reform on Veteran care. Trump merely added to that, quite marginally.

In fact, by his admission, he added a benefit for blindness, insisting that it was only payable if both eyes were blind.

That's no big deal at all. Covering sight should be a core benefit anyway, as should loss of limbs or organ failure.

The second claim, and its a recurring one, is that he presided over the greatest economy ever.

That is not even half true. Obama had numerous quarters that outgrew Trump's economy.

In fact Trump had a relatively languid 2.3% average annual GDP growth in the years preceding Covid-19. Hardly an achievement.

But the graph shows others years that outperformed Trump and there were years before that under Johnson and Kennedy, that were better.

As for unemployment, Bush presided over a major rise in unemployment following the 2008 crash.

But Obama corrected that by steadily bringing unemployment down to about 5%. Trump merely rode that wave to 4+% and claimed he did it. He didn't. Obama did.

But now unemployment is over 11% and GDP contracted in the last quarter by 33%. So Trump's economy lacked structural resilience.

Why does it matter?

In Matthew 24: 4,5,11 we are warned about days of deceit and lies, not just untruth, by organised misinformation.

Never has that been more evident than now. But its not just coming from Trump whose lie count now exceeds 20,000.

Sadly evangelicals are going onto platforms and lying regularly, because they feel that justifies their ends or interests.

Make no mistake, the 9th commandment and other hard warnings confirm that God has no place in his realm for liars.

But what saddens me most is how often souls pass on fake news without checking, by assuming its source to be reliable.

Where will this take our world? If the truth sets free, what will untruth do? It will rob us of freedom.

If we want to do some moral good in this life, resist untruth or if you can't then stick to worthy news or worthy content.
