A satellite took photos of recent cracks and breakaways in the Milne ice-shelf, Canada.

That small fragment on the left, which broke away from Ellesmere island, is 80 square kilometres in area.

Since then it has fragmented further and drifted out into the ocean, where it will melt into the sea.

At the beginning of this century Ellesmere's ice coverage was 8,600 square kilometres in area, now it is down to 500 square kilometres.

If you look carefully you can also see numerous "melt ponds" of blue water. They will freeze and crack open more of the ice.

Despite all of this, climate-dissidents argue against global warming or at least are in denial of it being man-made.

If not man-made, what does it matter? Its happening anyway.

Earthquakes are natural, but that doesn't stop us from quake-proofing buildings or avoiding fault lines or maintaining warning systems.

To be indifferent to what is happening is just fatalistic. We must try to help the world restore itself by responsible coexistence.

It doesn't help at all that while this is happening, the number of fires in the Amazon is even more than last year's vast burn.

But in truth, global warming has matched our collective rate of industrialization. We are a major cause, maybe not the only one.

The conspiratorialists who interpret everything they don't understand as the dark hand of global puppeteers, are their worst enemy.

How can we live with such superstition and fear. There is much to be gained by being friendly to the earth.

Green tech is a huge new economic growth node and its so exciting to think of future cities and homes powered by natural energy.

What scope it offers for healthier lives and better prospects for the natural world on our doorsteps?

But if we don't do something serious about it all, our children will pay a great price for our follies.

Suffice to say that global warming will not stop if we deny it, it will only get worse, far worse.
