Although Australia has done well by global standards, it offers important lessons.
For although they flattened their curve and got down to such small daily numbers that they were well out of the woods ...
... they reopened too quickly. This virus will demand respect. It can bite hard and set back all gains overnight.
So Australia has resurged and has now put Victoria on indefinite lockdown, with Sydney also on hold.
The Northern Territories are stating provisionally that cross border travel will be restricted until 2022.
Until then 14 day quarantines will be imposed for all travel in and out of the state.
General travel bans in Australia are likely to remain in place until Christmas, according to PM Morrison.
Here is the daily graph:
Other nations, like South Africa, are seeing positive trends, but no one anywhere is ready to claim victory over the pandemic.
It may be here for 2 or more years and despite President Trump's assurance that a vaccination is nearing perfection that seems to be wishful thinking on the part of the beleaguered leader.
So, maybe nations that have been cautious ought to be thankful that their leaders have held their ground.
Because the only way to beat this is liking beating cockroaches in your kitchen - through relentless persistence.
