The Air India plane was repatriating about 190 souls stranded in Dubai by the Corona virus.
It made two attempts to land at Calicut, airport in Karala, but in pouring Monsoon rain.
The Boeing 737 overshot the runway, skidded off the runway, plunged down a 35 foot slope and crashed before breaking into two.
The runway is an elevated flat surface with ditches on the side, so once the plane veered off the runway, into the ditch it went.
That left 17 dead, dozens hospitalized and 15 seriously injured among 184 passengers, 10 infants and 6 crew.
The weather conditions are typical for the time of year, but have been heavy. Similar mishaps have happened before during the Monsoons. Indeed a landslide happened near to the airport.
There will be a full inquiry, but thankfully the plane never caught fire and rescuers were able to save most of those on board.
