It happened to John D Rockefeller. It's happening again.

One of the cornerstones of the US economic miracle, has been its long-standing anti-trust laws.

It forced Standard Oil to break up its monopoly on US oil production in 1911.

And that broadened participation, which is what the law is all about. Capitalism needs competition.

Now its the turn of GAFA, the gang of four big tech companies.

Apple, Google, Amazon and Facebook are now in congressional hearings over their current domination.

You might think they compete against each other. Not so, they each dominate a different sector of the Tech industry.

Apple is a dominant US player in smart phones and related platforms, but it does have strong rivals like Huawei and Samsung.

But Amazon, Google and Facebook are very powerful and dominant, which means they also dominate Advertising spend.

The weak argument by Jeff Bizos, of Amazon, that America needs big firms assumes it also needs huge, dominant firms.

America has big firms, plenty of them, but their profits, prices and services are self-regulated by healthy competition.

Unfortunately for Bizos, Trump has had him in his target for nearly four years and he will certainly push this agenda.

But its being led by a Democrat majority. Republicans are more concerned with liberal domination of news.

Either way, a break up of their monopolies is inevitable. And that will likely spur new innovation and better offerings.

The competition laws of the US are very clear and dare not be bent if the US wants to avoid proliferation of such behaviors.

So, its likely to bode well for the US and the global economy.
